This Alberta town is the ‘Star Trek’ capital of Canada & even has its own spaceship

Our province has some incredible destinations, but there’s no place quite like Vulcan, Alberta – an entire town dedicated to the iconic sci-fi series, Star Trek.

Located about 40 minutes SE of High River, Vulcan has quite the reputation and was even the subject of a trip Leanord Nimoy (Spock) took in April of 2010.

Here, guests are invited to live long and prosper, visit their themed tourist centre (when it’s open) and are encouraged to take photos in front of their model Starship Enterprise – which is incredibly impressive.

So why space? Well, according to Travel Alberta, the town of Vulcan was founded in 1913 by a CPR surveyor who had an interest in Mythology and actually named the town after the Roman God of fire.

“Originally all the streets in Vulcan were named after the gods and goddesses of the classical world such as Juno, Mars and Jupiter,” they wrote.

Of course, by the time Star Trek had premiered the town took on a new identity and really leaned into the fact that Spock, a beloved character on the show, was from a planet of the same name.

In 1995 the town unveiled their Starship Enterprise, then in 1998, its spaceship-looking visitor centre opened its doors, which together, earned them the title of ‘Official Star Trek Capital of Canada.’

Want to see it for yourself? Pack your bags and check it out.

It’s a must-visit – especially if you’re a certified Trekkie!
