The last meteor shower of 2022 peaks tonight & here’s how to see it

2022 is nearing its end but space has one last treat in store for us before the new year! No matter where you are, look up for the Ursid Meteor Shower, a dazzling December display that peaks tonight, Wednesday the 21st.

While it’s definitely not considered the biggest or best event of the year, those who can appreciate planets and space beyond our own are encouraged to bundle up and check it out with friends, family or their special someone.

The reason? The new moon of course!

As we approach the 23rd’s ultra-dark sky, stars, satellites and meteors will appear brighter than usual, which can enhance the viewer’s experience as long as it’s a clear night.

According to EarthSky, expect at least 10 fireballs per hour – but cross your fingers for more!

An unpredictable event, the Ursid meteor shower has been known to have “bursts,” in which as many as 100 “shooting stars” have been observed every 60 minutes.

Interested in seeing it for yourself? This particular event peaks at the following times:

  • 4:22 am CST
  • 3:22 am MST
  • 6:52 am NST
  • 6:22 am AST
  • 5:22 am EST
  • 2:22 am PST

As per usual, make sure to find a dark spot, far removed from light pollution and dress warm! It’s a chilly one out there, Canada and you don’t want to freeze your butts off!

Good luck, get cozy and don’t forget to keep an eye on the Gemids Meteor shower as well, which can be seen until December 24th.

Enjoy and happy watching!
