Trudeau just pledged $1.3B to help build the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain

We’ve got good news, commuters! Today, PM Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government will cover up to $1.3B to help cover the construction of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain. What’s more, construction kicks off next week! Here’s what to know.

The new federal funding covers 4 new stations and around 9km of track. This has been earmarked for the western portion of the line, covering Fleetwood to Langley. Meanwhile, the BC government already has $1.6B for the eastern portion, which will have four stations between King George Station and Fleetwood.

In the same press conference, Trudeau also confirmed that the federal government will help out with the Arbutus-UBC extension, but in a much smaller format. That $30-$40M will cover around 40% of the detailed planning of the extension. There’s no real number on what that will actually cost, but early estimates pegged it around $3.5B.

With any luck, the new Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Expo Line extension will be finished around 2025. Which, coincidentally, is when the Millenium Line to Arbutus should be done as well. One thing’s for sure- Vancouver is about to see a lot of construction over the next few years.

But hey, if it means more access to public transit, we’re all for it!
