Toronto’s getting buried all over again in another big snow storm today

Just as we were starting to dig ourselves out of Toronto’s snowstorm from last Monday, it looks like we’re starting the work week with another major snowfall event.

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for Toronto, saying that 5 to 10 cm of snowfall will hit the city by this evening, which will be “heavy at times.”

“Snow will begin this afternoon and continue through the evening,” says the advisory. “Southwesterly winds over Lake Ontario is expected to enhance the snowfall rates, especially for areas closer to the lake shore.”

Blowing snow might reduce visibility and make road conditions extra tricky to navigate, but hopefully won’t cause highways to shut down like during last week’s storm.

However, Environment Canada does say that poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

Snowfall is expected to begin in the afternoon today and continue into the evening. At its peak, we could see 1 to 2 cm of snow accumulation per hour. Better have your snow shovel and waterproof boots at the ready!

The good news is that we likely won’t see another major snowfall event like last Monday for the rest of the winter season.

Environment Canada’s Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Peter Kimbell told Curiocity that “it’s very probable that [the storm on January 17th] was the biggest storm of the winter.”

Here’s to hoping that the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow this year. We could use an early start to spring right about now!
