Toronto is holding a New Year’s Eve fireworks show with a twist this year

After last year’s lonely New Year’s Eve, Toronto is ready to bring back the celebrations to ring in 2022. The city will host a dazzling fireworks show for the first time since the pandemic, but it’ll be modified to keep big crowds from forming in one place.

Mayor John Tory said that the “10-minute, high-altitude fireworks display” will be held at several locations along the waterfront, providing several viewing spots for people to see the show and also more opportunities for people to view it from a distance.

According to Tory, the fireworks will be visible anywhere in the city with a view of the lake, as far east as Scarborough and as far west as Etobicoke.

“Our economic development staff have worked with Toronto Public Health to make sure that this can be done in a way that is safe but represents, as we’ve been trying to do in every area, something that is between last year’s rather stark lonely experiences where people couldn’t be with each other at all to something that goes partway to the return to normalcy,” Tory said via CP24.

The city won’t be hosting an in-person New Year’s Eve celebration at Nathan Phillips Square and will opt for a virtual experience with a 90-minute live stream taken from the CN Tower.

Slowly but surely, Toronto seems to be returning to its old self. The city even brought back the annual Cavalcade of Lights, which is held nightly all the way through the holiday season and into January.

Other winter events are making a comeback this month too, including the Kensington Market Winter Solstice on December 21st. Performers and vendors will take over the neighbourhood, but the event won’t be hosting its usual street parade this year.
