Toronto is getting a brand new Black art and activism center

It’s been a turbulent year for social reform worldwide. And while things in North America and Canada specifically are far from perfect, things are changing. On that note, Toronto is getting a sorely needed 10,000 square foot center for Black activism and joy that “seeks to nurture Black radical creation in Toronto and beyond”.

The center is called Wildseed Centre for Art and Activism and if the name sounds familiar to you it’s because the name is inspired by Octavia Butler’s novel. The space is being launched by Black Lives Matter Canada and will be located at 24 Cecil St. Within the three-story building, visitors will find a community-run, gallery, studio, and more as well as a home to Black Lives Matter. And while the building was purchased by BLM, the city will prove the Wildseed Centre with $250k for upgrades.

We’re very happy to see the city providing support to the center and hope that this is the beginning of more and continued support for Black communities and organizations. It’s a space for Black community members of all ages that will allow a home for important work to be done for years to come. And what’s best of all is that it’s almost complete.

According to the center’s Instagram, the space should be open by winter 2021. You can keep up with the center by clicking here and here. We can’t wait to see more updates and look forward to its opening.
