Toronto-area school board hiring tons of unqualified emergency teachers right now

If you’re a university grad or student and have experience working with kids, this school board doesn’t just want you, they need you. The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is now hiring Uncertified Emergency Supply Teachers for the current school year amid a huge shortage.

With 75,000 students and counting, the DDSB is one of the few Ontario school boards “experiencing growth,” and is desperately trying to fill its roster of supply teachers.

DDSB Superintendant Heather Mundy told CTV News that there are hundreds of positions to fill and that all staff, including principals, are jumping in to cover them.

That’s what inspired the DDSB to start recruiting emergency supply teachers, who aren’t required to have a teaching degree or certification to get the job. The posting says that you must be enrolled in a university degree program or a university graduate to apply.

You need experience working and/or volunteering with kids, including those with different cultural backgrounds, needs, and capabilities. You’ll also be required to ensure the safety of students, communicate effectively with staff, and maintain strict confidentiality of student information.

You’ll need to provide a resume, cover letter, and at least two references to apply, and be available to work at least one day a week if you get the job. You’ll also be subject to the DDSB’s COVID-19 vaccination policy, and complete two rapid tests a week if you aren’t able to show proof.

The schools you’d be working in would be across Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, and Oshawa, plus the townships of Uxbridge, Brock, and Scugog. Mundy said that hundreds of people have applied so far and that all of the candidates are “vetted very carefully.”
