Top doctor says Toronto could be enjoying patio season sooner than we think

Our favourite season, patio season, might be closer than we think. As Toronto trudges along in the grey zone of Ontario’s colour-coded framework, talks of reopening outdoor dining has come up among officials. No, outdoor dining is not included in the grey zone. And no, we’re not moving ranks up to the red zone just yet. But still, there have been whispers of making an exception for the well-being of the folks in the city.

So let’s back it up for you. This information comes from a recent statement made by Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa. On Wednesday afternoon, she told reporters that although the “data does not support” moving the city into the less restrictive red zone, conversations are taking place about loosening certain restrictions.

More specifically, outdoor dining and outdoor fitness classes. Which brings us to patio season!!! Oh, and more exercise opportunities. But we’re definitely more pumped about the patios.

Apparently, Dr. de Villa has been in talks with her provincial counterpart, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams, about making the changes happen.

“Everyone sees the exhaustion within the city as it relates to all the limitations COVID-19 has forced upon us,” she said on Wednesday. “This is why modest steps forward in the realm of outdoor activity are a good proving ground at this time.”

Hey – as long as it’s safe to do so, we’re more than ready for the change. As the weather continues to heat up in Toronto, this news couldn’t have come at a better time.
