Canadian university lands in third place worldwide in a prestigious new ranking

When it comes to university rankings, Canadian schools often make the grade. However, one Canadian university has landed an incredibly impressive spot on the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

This ranking features over 1,700 universities around the world. It rates schools based on their initiatives to solve the world’s greatest challenges.

These initiatives are actually called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are part of a program developed by the United Nations.

The SDGs were established by UN member nations in 2015 to “guide global action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure shared peace and prosperity for all people by 2030,” according to a press release.

There are 17 SDGs in total, ranging from poverty to climate action to inequality and all other issues pertaining to the well-being of society and the planet.

Queen’s University in Ontario is the first school in Canada to be named in the ranking and has landed in third place worldwide.

Yes, you read that right. Our very own Queen’s U is the third-most advanced in the world when it comes to achieving these SDGs.

Queen’s has landed in first place for its innovative strategies to address SDG 2, which is Zero Hunger.

It’s also ranked among the top in the world for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

These Impact Rankings evaluate schools based on four important categories — research, teaching, outreach, and stewardship—using a wide range of data points.

The second highest-ranking school is the University of Alberta in 7th place, followed by the University of Victoria and Western University who tied for 9th place.

Leave it to Canadian universities to always impress on the world stage!
