This world-famous Alberta lake has a secret campsite you can only get to by kayak or canoe

Alberta is a province full of surprises. From Minnewanka’s underwater ghost town to its many secret hiking trails, there will always be something new to see, something new to do and even somewhere new to stay. One of these enchanting spots? The Hidden Cove Campsite on Maligne Lake.

Known for its insanely blue water, Maligne is one of the most photographed places in the entire world.

Chances are that even if you’ve never seen it in person, you’ve definitely seen it in a photo, on a postcard or in a movie.

Little do most know, right along the shores of the island, there’s a private campground occupied mostly by the friendly four-legged animals who live in the area.

To get to this aptly named spot, guests actually have to paddle their way to the dock, which sounds like a pain – but hear us out.

Using a canoe or a kayak, the ride will take an estimated 2 hours or 3 (depending on the weather and the weight of the boat) but it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Not only is the view from here incredible, but the serene little site also has a shelter fitted with picnic tables, a wood stove, and even food lockers so you don’t have to worry about your furry neighbours getting into your grub.

This is probably one of the most unique natural campsites in the entire province and one of the best ways to experience the Rockies.

Guests are limited to a 2-night maximum stay but really, that’s all the time you’ll need to appreciate the area. Also, because you have to transport all of your gear via boat, you’ll probably only be able to pack a weekend’s worth of food anyway.
