For as long as we can remember, Vancouver has always been a Mecca for film production around the world. But, while we might be more used to seeing the city in Hollywood movies, a new Punjabi movie filmed in Vancouver is breaking box office records in India.

The movie is called Honsla Rakh and is the highest-opening Punjabi movie ever according to Box Office India! Now that’s something to be proud of for both the Vancouver and the Punjabi film industry. Teamwork really does make the dream work.

The movie’s title can be translated to “be patient” and is about a single father raising his son and looking for love. It stars Indian actors Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, with Sonam Bajwa and Shehnaaz Gill in supporting roles.

The movie has already grossed more than ₹50 crore worldwide, the equivalent of $9 million CAD since October 15. It even made seventh on the North American Box Office roundup last weekend.

The movie not only heavily features the city, but it also heavily features Canadian talent. With local Punjabi actors on-screen and over 100 BC crew members, it’s really a wonderful instance of two film industries working together to create great art!

If you’re looking to watch Honsla Rakh, there are even a few cinemas in the Lower Mainland showing it. So, if you’re looking to see a Vancouver-set film, this might be the ticket.
