This stunning ‘Luminaria’ festival is one of Alberta’s most dazzling winter events

Picture this: you’re taking a wintry stroll through candle-lit pathways, sipping hot apple cider and listening to acapella singers in the distance. Sound good? Then you’d better add Luminaria at the University of Alberta’s botanic garden to your winter bucket list! This annual event is sure to sell out (like it does every year), and for good reason. Let’s get into it!

Like the name suggests, Luminaria is a luminous, peaceful, and serene winter wonderland. Candlelight and starlight act as your guides here, as you wander around a variety of light displays, sculptures, and even live entertainment. There are sculptures of light in the Aga Khan Garden, illuminated Snow Sprites dancing about, and even Indigenous drumming and storytelling sessions.

While things will look a little different this year, it won’t really affect the magic of the night. Basically, tickets need to be bought online and social distancing needs to be maintained. We doubt you’d be huddling up for warmth with strangers on a regular year, so we still think this event will sell out.

From the miniature winter village to the woodland creatures and fairy houses, this place will have you feeling like you’re in a Hallmark Christmas movie in no time. We’ll catch you there soon, Canada!
