ICYMI, Calavera Cantina opened up shop earlier this year for latin-inspired dishes and drinks that are as colourful as they are tasty. And for the past few months, this place has not just been our go-to for all our Mexican cravings but has also become a South city fave. And just in time for the holidays, Calavera Cantina got a vibrant makeover and a brand-new menu that Calgary should be excited about.
So, we recently re-visited the place for the umpteenth time and well, we were greeted by a far more chill and colourful ambience than we remembered. With lively art upgrades and lots and lots of greenery, the resto now gives off some serious tropical vibes.
It wasn’t just the decor that received a makeover, the menu too got quite the upgrade. Frankly, with their incredibly flavourful, house-made everything, we did not think it was possible but they managed to take the menu- food and drinks- several notches higher.
Let’s start with the food- as always, we ordered quite the spread and every damned thing on our table looked, smelled and tasted friggin awesome. When it comes to Mains, the Brick Chicken that came with grilled avocado and charred street corn, 14 oz Pork Chop and ridiculously flavourful Steak Frites are certainly something everyone ought to try.
And you definitely can’t skip the finger foods, ‘cause they are finger-lickin-gooooood. The Street Corn Nachos are fully loaded and perfect for any nacho lover, and you’ve just gotta try the Animal Fries for yourself.
The highlight of our meal however has to be the Blackened Lingcod that came with a deliciously refreshing salad. Not so surprisingly, this dish did not last long on the table.
Now, for the drinks! The drinks certainly did not disappoint either- be it the colourful Stop Eating All My Candy or the IG-worthy margs & pitchers or the blend-it-yourself margaritas. Oh, and blend-it-yourself?
Well, at Calavera, you’ve gotta earn your keep. JK, but they do have a margarita cycle, so when you order your pitcher of margs, you better be ready to hop on. But trust us, the quick spin is the best way to gear up for a refreshing marg (or three).
And as refreshing as the drinks were, we have a hunch that they tasted even better because of what they came in. Expect some super cool mugs and glasses (we mean you, skull mug and also you, pineapple glass), so your phone better be ready to snap some ‘grammable table settings.
All in all, it turned out to be one of the funnest meals we had in a long, long time. So do yourself and your loved ones a favour, round them up and hit Calavera Cantina RN. It is everything you’d want your holiday meal to be!
