Happy hump day, local history lovers! We stumbled across an amazing website that lets you slide between modern and historical photos, and we figured we needed to share it. So, without further ado, let’s check the ‘Vancouver Now and Then’ website.
The site was created by the local architectural photographer John Bentley. While he’s been taking photos of Vancouver buildings for years, he got a very fun idea back in 2020. He realized that Vancouver’s archives contain many photos of the city’s historic and heritage buildings.

Plus, the older ones are all a part of the public domain. So, Bentley set out with a unique goal- find vintage photos, then recreate them if the buildings are still standing. The result? Dozens of incredible side-by-side photos of our most memorable buildings.
Like the Dominion Building, the Stanley Park Pavilion and Granville Island, just to name a few. What’s more, they’re all available on a handy map. Check out your neighbourhood, then see what the rest of the city has to offer!
