The new year is off to a flying start and I can’t think of a better way to embrace 2025 than by getting out and enjoying all the fun Calgary has to offer. From outdoor skating to glowing light festivals, these are 10 of the best things to do in and around Calgary this week.
Bowness Park’s outdoor skating rink is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and there are skate rentals available by the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre if you need to borrow some.
Once you’re done at the rink, you can check out the 1.6 km track next to the Bow River.

Central Commons Park also has a beautiful outdoor skating rink to enjoy this winter.
Skating is free of charge, open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Winter Festival of Lights at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is the ultimate winter night out. Take in glowing lights, sip some hot chocolate and embark on a truly magical stroll.
\When: Thursday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 10 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: Corner of 9th Avenue South and Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge
Time: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Cost: $10 to $13.50 per ticket
Legacy’s Community Light Display is still on, an experience where the night is lit up with over a million tiny bulbs strung along the clock tower, the buildings and the houses.

Where: Legacy Village Way Southeast and Legacy Boulevard Southeast
Cost: Free
Banff’s gondola has an extra special way to experience winter. Take an enchanting ride displaying the Rocky Mountains with lights, colours, and music.
Tickets are $66 per person.

Comedian Adam Tiller is in Calgary for a week, so if you’re in need of a good laugh you have plenty of options to attend a show.
Tickets are $15.49 with each show happening at Comedy Cave.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
A stage production of Beetlejuice is on at Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium with shows on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Each show goes on at 7:30 p.m. with tickets starting at $116.

Nothin’ like a weeknight hockey game! The Calgary Hitmen are at home this Wednesday and Friday meaning you have to chances to head over to Scotiabank Saddledome and catch the action.
