Who’s ready for the return of a beloved Vancouver tradition? Stanley Park’s outdoor theatre experience, Theatre Under the Stars, has officially set the stage for summer 2024 – and two iconic shows are on the roster: CATS and School of Rock!

Dating all the way back to 1940, Theatre Under the Stars has been transforming Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl into a special summer stage, and it looks like this year will be no different. So get ready to enjoy a summer full of memorable music, laughs, and artistry under the night sky.

“We’re thrilled to welcome audiences back for another season of joyful discovery in our magical outdoor theatre setting,” says TUTS General Manager Kevin Woo. “From the razzle-dazzle of CATS – one of the most beloved musicals of all time – to the fist-pumping family adventure that is School of Rock, this year’s season is bursting with spectacular musical numbers and inspirational characters who are chasing big dreams.”

2024 shows

First up, we have CATS – an award-winning musical on both Broadway and London’s West End, where it played for a record of 21 years. Telling the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, the musical has tons of unforgettable songs, based on the whimsical poetry of T.S. Eliot.

Director Ashley Wright will make his TUTS debut, joined by choreographer Julie Murphy.

Now, we come to School of Rock, which is based on the 2003 film with the same name, starring Jack Black. All about the irrepressible power of rock ‘n roll, the musical follows aspiring rock star Dewey Finn as he navigates the role of a substitute teacher at a private school.

Choreographed by Matthew Rossoff and directed by Tracey Power (who directed The Prom last year!), the show will feature local youth musicians in its ensemble cast in partnership with School of Rock Vancouver.

Want to catch a show on opening night? Head to the Malkin Bowl at Stanley Park on July 10th or 11th.

Note that all shows will take place at 8 pm, except during the Honda Celebration of Light (July 20th, 24th, and 27th) when the shows begin at 7 pm.
