The world’s longest ice skating trail sits on this gorgeous BC lake

Turns out that the Rocky Mountains of BC are home to more than just great skiing. Lake Windermere, which sits in the Columbia Valley, is home to the world’s longest skating trail! If you’re thinking that a road trip is in order this winter, then this is a great destination. Here’s what to know about it.

Lake Windermere connects two local communities, Invermere in the north and Windermere in the east. While it’s a popular spot for boating and swimming in the summer, it truly comes alive during the winter. The Lake Windermere Whiteway, as it’s called, was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest skating trail in 2014.

It’s well-deserving of the title. When fully open, the Whiteway offers an incredible 30 kilometres or so to explore, stretching the entirety of the lake. What’s more, it doubles as a stunning spot for cross-country skiing! Perfect, no hill climbs for us this winter.

The Whiteway is maintained by the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club, which posts regular updates about the trail’s status throughout the winter. Heads up- for those looking to tackle this behemoth, your best bet is to wait until the dead of winter, as the lake takes its time in freezing each year.

Plus, the area is home to more than just the skating trail. Both the Radium Hot Springs and the Fairmont Hot Springs are a quick drive away, offering the perfect spot to kick back and relax after a day on the ice. Or, for the more adventurous among us, there are tons of incredible ski resorts that can be visited during an extended stay.

Like we said to kick off this article, if you’re looking to explore some lesser-known parts of BC this winter, then this is a great pick! Have fun out there, folks!
