The Seattle Art Museum was just gifted a major collection worth $400 million

If you’ve been going to the Seattle Art Museum for a while then you probably recognize a good chunk of their collection. The museum has around 25,000 pieces but a select few are normally the ones you see on rotation. That being said, the museum just acquired 19 more thanks to a generous gift.

The 19 pieces came from the Friday Foundation and are valued at a total of $400 million. But what’s even cooler is that this foundation is the legacy of local collectors Richard E. Lang and Jane Lang Davis. So that means the 16 paintings, 1 drawing, and 2 sculptures are from the Lang’s private collection. And if you’re wondering they range from the years 1945 to 1976.

The works are by artists like Francis Bacon, Lee Krasner, and Joan Mitchell. But beyond the generous donation of works, the foundation also donated $10.5 million for the care and conservation of the collection. So we’re very excited to see when these pieces will be debuted to the public. After all, it’s not every day that the SAM gets a gift like this.

In the meantime, the SAM will reopen to the public on March 5th and at that time you can catch some amazing new shows.
