If you see weekend getaway-ers and vacationers flocking in the general direction of Jasper, don’t be alarmed. All is well. It’s just that the Dark Night has risen yet again (applaud for the DC reference anyone? Nope? No one? Never mind then). So, the Dark Sky Festival hosted in Jasper National Park, the world’s second-largest Dark Sky Preserve, is back on. And it’s as spectacular as ever (even more, if that’s possible). The festival kicked off on October 15th and will continue all the way through October 24th.

In case you’re not in the know, Jasper’s Dark Sky Festival is a 10-day long stargazing celebration. But, its popularity is only partially owed to the beautiful views of the star-studded sky. Of course, stars are the main event but the fest actually features a long line-up of programs- both paid and unpaid- for just about everyone!

This year’s schedule boasts of a whole array of interesting events including a drone light show, planetarium exhibits, photography programs, an orchestra, a space-themed brunch for kids, and two different helicopter tours among others. All of this amidst the park’s awe-inspiring fall beauty.

While the wonderful weather, the insanely gorgeous foliage, and the fun activities might keep you from doing so, we strongly recommend you venture out of the park and into Jasper downtown. This is where you’ll see the galaxy on earth as Keenan Kirk, aka Kidpixel, along with local artists, has painted constellations on various storefronts and windows. Needless to say, these paintings are straight-up gram-worthy.

Oh, and did we forget to mention the galaxy-themed everything! From beer and vodka to cookies and brunches, the fest is truly bringing constellations to life in many different ways.

If you haven’t already started throwing stuff in the trunk of your car and are still here, might we suggest you check out the Tourism Jasper website for all the info about the festival, the programs, the safety measures?! And if you’re not able to make it this year, don’t sweat it. This is a yearly festival, and it’s never too early to start planning your next vacation!
