The city wants your feedback on 3 major new buildings downtown

We’re big on civic engagement folks, so why not let you know that you can have your say on 3 major buildings proposed in downtown Vancouver? These bad boys will be shaping the skyline of the city, after all, so they might as well have a little public input!

The call for feedback is part of Vancouver’s ongoing ‘Shape Your City’ campaign. This online portal provides a rundown of all the proposed rezoning and development applications in the city, ranging from small facelifts all the way to, well, major highrise buildings. And, that’s exactly what we’re looking at today.

First up is 526 Granville Street, which is a new skinny office building from the architecture firm Perkins&Will. The building is set to be some 24 stories tall, and will occupy a prominent position near the intersection of Granville Street and West Pender. Fun fact- there won’t be any underground parking, instead relying on nearby public transit stations for tenants.

Next, we’ve got 1040-1080 Barclay Street, a pair of residential buildings proposed for the West End. Located just off Burrard, the two towers will have over 481 market units and 162 social housing units, plus a childcare centre on the premises. Here, the design comes from Buro Ole Scheeren.

And finally, our personal favourite is 1728 Alberni Street. While not as big as the Barclay Street option (the towers are around 100 feet shorter), there’s no denying that the inverted buildings will be real head-turners if the application goes through. Turns out, the design from Heatherwick Studio has function and form, since the slender base will allow for better street-level natural lightings and views.

Of course, Vancouver is changing all the time! And, the city’s ‘Shape Your City’ campaign is a great way to stay informed. After all, we’re the ones living here.
