The city is transforming the end of 17th Ave with construction of the new Stampede LRT

We’re making headway, folks! Today, The CMLC broke ground at the big Stampede LRT Station expansion site, a project that will play a major role in transforming East Victoria Park and 17th Avenue into Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment District.

This project has actually been underway since 2019 and is said to make the commute into the inner city more comfortable and shorter.

“We look forward to project-managing this work over the next two years to give Calgarians an improved LRT station as well as a practical connection between neighbouring Rivers District communities,” said Kate Thompson, CEO & President of CMLC, in a press release.

So what exactly will they be doing?

Well, between now and October, crews will be removing all of the staircases to the LRT station along Mcleod Trail and adding accessible street-level pedestrian crossings in its place in hopes of creating a more hospitable system.

In addition to this, they’ll also be extending 17th Ave across the LRT tracks, linking the new and existing mixed-use corridor on either sale of Mcleod Trail.

Luckily, for those who will still require transit service during construction, a temporary platform will ensure that you’re still able to travel to and from work, home or your errands, so don’t panic!

“We are coordinating with our partners at Calgary Transit and Calgary Stampede to minimize disruptions while we complete these improvements,” continued Thompson.

Construction for the new LRT is scheduled for 2023 while the expansion project will be completed in coordination with the BMO Expansion in 2024, so it won’t be long, Calgary!
