Ready to taste traditional Indigenous eats and support a new local business? The Ancestor Cafe is about to open in Fort Langley next week, and you’ll definitely want to check it out.

This marks the latest venture by Chef Sarah Meconse Mierau, who also owns Tradish – which brings plant-medicine jams and organic bannock to urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Menu & ingredients

The new cafe will further support Indigenous cuisine and sovereignty, allowing guests to enjoy traditional Indigenous nourishment in the form of hand-crafted jams, bison and elk bannock tacos, baked goods, and lemonade.

Using ingredients like juniper, chamomile, dandelion, and sage, the menu at The Ancestor Cafe will incorporate the benefits of Indigenous medicinal plants to support overall wellbeing.

“The Ancestor Cafe is a welcoming environment where Indigenous cuisine is readily available to everyone,” says Chef Mierau. “Our goal is to nurture a deeper appreciation for Indigenous culture through culinary experiences and provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about Indigenous ingredients and our dishes.”

What’s more, Chef Mierau’s eldest son, Anthony, aged 17, will debut as the cafe’s lead cook. According to the cafe, he hopes to encourage Indigenous youth to continue learning about their culture and traditional forms of nourishment.

Through collaborations with local Indigenous communities and suppliers, the cafe plans to source all of its ingredients ethically and by using traditional sourcing methods whenever possible.

Opening & info

Located inside the Fort Langley National Historic Site, The Ancestor Cafe will officially open its doors on Thursday, February 29th – which also happens to be Leap Day!

The cafe will be open from Wednesday to Sunday thereafter.

So there you have it, Vancouver! Get ready for a new place to enjoy traditional Indigenous eats.
