The Alberta ‘groundhog’ Balzac Billy just gave his 2023 weather prediction

And just like that we’ve come full circle! Groundhog Day is back, Alberta, and Balzac Billy has officially made his prediction for the 2023 season!

A ritual first brought to the U.S. by German immigrants, North America’s very first groundhog day was actually held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in 1887.

Now celebrated all over the continent, Groundhog Day still takes place on February 2nd every year and is meant to predict how much longer we’ll have to brave the cold.

With the help of a woodchuck (or in Wild Rose Country’s case, a man in a costume), people use the animal’s shadow to determine whether we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter or an early start to the spring.

So, what did Balzac Billy in Alberta see this Groundhog Day?

Lucky for us, our furry friend didn’t see his shadow this morning,  so we could be looking at an early spring!

To witness the magic for yourself, The Blue Grass Nursery live-streamed the whole thing – and you can watch it here, otherwise – cross your fingers!

We’re hoping for the best!
