Today, with our feet in the snow, we decided that it’s going to take something a lot stronger than coffee to get us through the rest of the winter. Enter Skunkworks, a brand-new moonshine distillery in Calgary.

Thanks to our grandparents and their stories of “the old country,” we honestly grew up thinking this stuff was exclusively made in rain barrels behind a shed on a farm. Turns out that actually couldn’t be further from the truth!

Skunkworks is owned and operated by a geologist and an engineer who know a thing or two about liquid fuel, so we can assure you this definitely isn’t your great-grandparent’s prohibition hooch.

These guys scientifically make smooth, sophisticated, simple moonshine from beets grown right here on the prairies! Which means they’re local, and you know we can get behind local.

This moonshine is good (really good, in fact) but you don’t just have to take our word for it. Try it before you buy it! Stop in and have a drink and eat your way through their small but tasty menu. Charcuterie and cheese bread, anyone?

Their 4th Street distillery itself has a super cozy, vintage, almost mysterious vibe. It’s very 20s gentleman meets evil secret lair. Inside, they show you how to mix their moonshine and can answer any questions you might have!

Skunkworks Distillery on 4th Street is open Thursday-Sunday and is definitely worth checking out!

We think we’ll take our Grandma. We’re sure they’ll be more than happy to debunk the “blinding” misconceptions she might still have.
