There is still time to plan a Canadian getaway this summer, and those wanting to explore by the road are looking towards B.C. for travel destinations.
Car rental marketplace Turo revealed its Summer Road Trip Report on Tuesday, July 21.
Based on data found within the annual report, economic pressure is leading Canadians to pivot their travel plans, not cancel them outright.
“We expected road trips to play a big role in Canadians’ summer travel plans this year, but what surprised us was the sheer scale,” said Bassem El-Rahimy, vice-president of Turo Canada.
“Canadians aren’t just taking one road trip,” added El-Rahimy. “They’re planning multiple getaways, spending hours behind the wheel and, in many cases, budgeting thousands to do it.
“That tells us this isn’t necessarily about finding a cheaper way to travel. It’s about choosing a better one.”
Turo’s findings show that two-thirds of Canadians are planning domestic travel this summer.
Placing third on the list of summer road trip destinations is Vancouver, just behind Toronto and just ahead of Montreal.
Those looking for nature adventures are also flocking to B.C. travel destinations, with the Whistler area ranked seventh for top Canadian outdoor road trip stopovers.
Whistler slid in just behind Tobermory/Bruce Peninsula, and landed ahead of Banff/Jasper on the list.
“Despite record fuel costs, a softened dollar, and soaring airfares, Canadians aren’t staying home this summer,” added Turo. “Rising costs are reshaping how Canadians travel, not whether they travel.”
Those looking to travel this summer and get away from it all can do so within B.C. at the best resort in Canada. And it’s just a two-hour drive away from Vancouver.
Fairmont Chateau Whistler has been named the number one resort in the country as part of the 31st anniversary of Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.
More than 661,000 votes were cast in this year’s survey, picking the best city and island escapes, safari outfitters, airlines, resorts, and hotels around the world.
However, a new study comparing rent, income, and vacation costs found that Vancouver is the most expensive city in Canada if you’re looking to balance rent with an occasional vacation.
Real estate platform Zoocasa compared the average vacation budget of $2,278 with monthly rent prices across 28 Canadian metro areas. It looked at how much rent takes from the average family’s after-tax income, then added the cost of a vacation to see how much pressure that puts on household budgets.
Nationally, rent alone accounts for between 15 and 33 per cent of household income, depending on the city. Add in the cost of a vacation, and that figure climbs above 50 per cent in many markets.
