There’s a skating oval with holiday light views just outside Edmonton

Just outside of Edmonton, you can skate in one of the most gorgeous skating ovals around.

Spruce Grove is one of Edmonton’s neighbouring communities, sitting west of the city. Here, you can enjoy some of the best sights, trail paths, and a stunning skating oval in its recently upgraded park. There’s so much to do and even more to see, and the winter season only amplifies the energy.

A skating oval in Central Park

In the city’s Central Park, there’s a skating oval meant for skating only, meaning no pucks or sticks, following a path around the most gorgeous holiday lights. Each year, the city lights up Central Park for beautiful sights and even more beautiful nights.

This skating oval isn’t the only surface you can slide on this season, though.

In total, the City of Spruce Grove has three outdoor skating rinks, three skating ovals, and three leisure ice surfaces. The outdoor ice surfaces are free for the community to use and are not scheduled.

There is more to do than skating, as Spruce Grove has an abundance of spaces for winter activities. From the Links Golf Course offering free cross-country ski trails to the tobogganing areas in one of its many parks, there’s a never-ending list of festive fun.

Stunning parks and trails

Aside from all the winter activities, just walking down the beautiful trails can be enough fun! The city not only prioritizes these trails as a physical connection, but also recognizes the ways these trails can create memories and build connections.

The city’s trail system connects the entirety of Spruce Grove, and it can all be viewed on the city’s website. In 2024, the Joint Trail Connection pathway was added to the City’s trail system to connect Spruce Grove and Stony Plain.

Throughout Spruce Grove, there are also a variety of neighbourhood parks and playgrounds you can check out, including Jubilee ParkCentral ParkHeritage Grove Park, and the Rotary Playscape. No matter where you are in the city, there’s a park you can find nearby.

Walk the trails and take in all that Spruce Grove has to offer this season. Explore the outdoors this winter in this scenic city!
