Washington has over 120 ‘sno-parks’ that are open for the season

Have you ever wished that you could visit a park strictly for snow activities? You actually can in Washington. Our state has 126 sno-parks for you to enjoy through both motorized and non-motorized sports. Here’s what they are and where to find them.

Washington’s sno-parks are spread from A to Y counties, meaning there’s a whole lot for you to explore. But what are they? The Washington Trails Association classifies them as parking lots that are cleared of snow during winter in order to provide access to snow-related recreation opportunities.

These include things like snowshoeing, nordic skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and even dogsledding depending on the sno-park. This year, parks are open between Wednesday, November 1st, and Tuesday, April 30th.

The parks are broken up into two categories, non-motorized and motorized. The first allows snowmobiles plus non-motorized activities like snowshoeing and the second does not allow snowmobiles. So depending on what you want in an experience, it is important to look at what kind of sno-park you are visiting.

In order to visit you do need a permit which can be purchased online and ranges in price from $25-$70 depending on if you want to go for just one day or the whole season. Permits are required between Friday, December 1st, and Sunday, March 31st.

Have fun out there, and stay safe!

Information on Washington’s sno-parks is from the Washington Trails Association and Washington State Parks and is accurate as of the publication date.
