This BC park is home to a popular ski resort with breathtaking ocean views

It’s no secret that Mount Seymour (Ch’ich eliwxih) is one of the most popular ski and snowboarding destinations near Vancouver, situated just 30 minutes away from the city. The provincial park’s proximity to the ocean leads to an annual snowfall of over 1,000 cm, according to Mount Seymour Resort, which means pro skiers and newcomers alike can hit the slopes and make lasting memories.

Year-round activities

With plenty of scenic viewpoints and opportunities for wildlife viewing, visitors to the park can explore the area year-round. In the warmer months, there are extensive lower mountain trails for mountain biking and upper mountain biking trails for hiking, as well as several lakes to take a dip in. This includes the largest of the lakes – Elsay Lake.

During the colder months, winter camping is permitted north of Brockton Point (free day-use passes) – though there are no designated sites.

Skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers can enjoy sweeping views of Vancouver, Mount Baker, and east over Indian Arm Park.

Finally, there’s a supervised snow play area perfect for families to check out, operated by the resort.

Safety & info

Note that the backcountry is extremely rugged and weather conditions can be unpredictable. Visitors are urged to proceed with caution after reviewing BC Parks’ Backcountry Guide and Winter Safety page.

As for hitting the slopes, the ski resort opens for the season on Friday, December 8th and will close for the season on Sunday, April 7th.

So there you have it, Vancouver! Whether you want to check out the mountain for the first or hundredth time, now is a great time to do it.

Don’t forget your winter tires!
