Canada is home to the largest concentration of snakes in the world

From waterfalls to bustling cities, there is no shortage of incredible places to visit from coast to coast, but the Narcisse snake dens in Manitoba are unique to Canada.

Widely considered the “biggest concentration of snakes in the world,” Narcisse is visited by people from across the globe, but there are a few things to note if you’re among them.

Why visit Narcisse?

Afraid of reptiles? Maybe sit this one out. Visitors will be in for a one-of-a-kind experience as thousands of red-sided garter snakes get ready for their annual mating ritual every spring.

According to the Manitoba government, this “spectacular ritual” lasts one to three weeks from late April or early May, depending on the weather.

Our advice? Keep your eyes open and stick to the path!

“There are four active snake dens at the Narcisse Snake Dens. The dens are connected by a 3.0-kilometre self-guiding interpretive trail,” the government of Manitoba explains on their website.

“Although the garter snakes are harmless, they are best viewed from the observation platforms built next to the dens.”

If, however, you miss the spring fling, you’ll be able to see them again in the fall when wet autumn weather forces them to go home.

Just remember, the activity level of the snake dens does change, so adjust your expectations accordingly and come prepared with a cap, windbreaker and, of course, some closed-toed shoes!

When in doubt, check their website, where updates are posted every few days during the spring and fall.

As for us, we’ll be cheering you on from a distance. There’s truly nothing else like the Snake Dens of Narcisse – it’s just not for us.
