These thrilling tidal rapids are one of BC’s greatest natural spectacles

Don’t let the rain fool you – early fall is a fantastic time of year to explore the many natural wonders British Columbia has to offer. And one that we can’t wait to add to our own list is Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park on the Sunshine Coast, home to one of the world’s greatest whitewater wonders, according to BC Parks.

With 200 billion gallons of water flowing through their narrows into a series of mesmerizing whirlpools, it’s easy to see why thrill-seekers flock from around the globe to behold this natural phenomenon.

Visitors can follow one of the most spectacular hikes on the Sunshine Coast through a forested path to the famed Sechelt Rapids.

Twice a day, the flow of the saltwater switches, reversing the direction of the ‘incredibly turbulent’ tidal flow. According to Sunshine Coast Tourism, the difference in water levels between one side of the rapids and the other can exceed nine feet high!

Best viewing times

According to a report compiled by Sunshine Coast Tourism, the best tidal viewing times this year include September 22nd to 30th, and the mornings and early afternoons of October 1st to 27th.

During these times, the rapids are expected to flow over 20 kilometres an hour!

So if it’s big currents and tidal activity you’re on the lookout for, head to the North Point viewing area. Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast Tourism notes that big waves can be spotted from the viewing area at Roland Point.
