Beer, food trucks & horse skiing? This unusual event kicks off in Alberta next month

While it may be nearing its end, winter is still here and happening and this March Albertans can check out a wild west event that celebrates the best that the chilly season has to offer. Next month, bundle up and crack a cold one for The Pole and Spur, a uniquely Canadian skijoring competition held in Alberta’s Crowsnest Pass.

Derived from the Norwegian word ‘skikjøring,’ which translates to “ski driving,” this unusual sport is similar to dog sledding, but requires a team of two skilled individuals – one to ride a horse and the other on a pair of skis behind them.

In a race against the clock, duos will face obstacles, gates, and rings, as well as potentially blistering cold and fanfare.

Described on their website as the ultimate mashup of “rednecks, horses and ski bums,” the 5th ever Pole and Spur will also have a beer garden, DJ and food trucks in addition to the contest itself, and will be unlike anything you’ve attended before (assuming that this is your first time checking it out).

Interested? This even will be held for one day only, on March 15th – as long as the weather cooperates.

Admission will be $5 each and it is recommended that you bring your own chairs as seating will be limited.

For more information you can visit their website here and enjoy friends! You won’t want to miss it!
