This boardwalk loop in ‘waterfall valley’ brings a touch of B.C. to Calgary

We covered the Silver Springs Boardwalk in Calgary this summer, but it’s a great time to revisit as the fall leaves change colour along the Bow River.

This trail meanders through an area known as “Waterfall Valley” to locals. With a boardwalk path, scenic views and whispers of the rushing Bow River all around you, it’s a trail that offers a hint of beautiful British Columbia, though you don’t have to leave our province to seek it out.

You can check out this 3 km loop before the city’s first snowfall. Morning frost will make the wood on the boardwalk path extra slippery, and you’re best tackling it with a pair of crampons or ice spikes to avoid falls in the winter months.

If you’re feeling in the mood for a little nature time, the Silver Springs loop is just the ticket.

What to expect

Two-thirds of the 3 km loop is paved, and with only 90 metres of elevation gain, it’s a dog and family-friendly urban hike that’s perfect for beginners.

To find it, you’ll need to head to the community of Silver Springs in northwest Calgary.

The entrance of the trail from the Bowmont Parking Lot will take you along the river path until you come across two signs that dip down into a forested area.

The trail begins with a dirt path that transitions into a boardwalk that runs along the Bow River’s edge. You can hear rushing water and experience picturesque views amongst the trees and river reed.

Boardwalk paths are commonly found in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, but this one is easily accessible without leaving the city centre.

Everyone needs an escape from city life sometimes, and this boardwalk is designed to bring you a sense of peace in the heart of Calgary.

Take a wander through the path and let us know what you find!
