The Seattle Cinerama will officially reopen in December under a new name

Earlier this year it was announced that Seattle Cinerama would reopen after the venue was acquired by SIFF from the estate of Paul G. Allen. A move that was exciting for Seattlites, history junkies, and cinephiles alike. Now, we have an opening date and more information on what to expect from the theatre in its new life.

First off, the Seattle Cinerama is now known as SIFF Cinema Downtown. The historic venue retains its iconic screen and is one of only two operating cinemas in the world of its kind. It is able to screen three-strip Cinerama films on an “epic” 97-foot curved screen consisting of 2,000 vertical strips. All in all, it’s a larger-than-life experience.

SIFF Cinema Downtown will reopen on Thursday, December 14th with Wonka. Onwards it will feature a mix of “blockbuster studio films, specialty festivals and events, and first-run arthouse cinema.”, There will be a reserved seating selection as well as premium concessions like local craft beer, and yes, the iconic chocolate popcorn.

Other unique qualities of the venue include reproductions of pop culture props on display, all curated by the Museum of Pop Culture.

Tickets for films have yet to go on sale but will be released soon. As always, we will continue to update you as more information becomes available.
