Shopper Drug Mart will stop using plastic shopping bags this week

It’s official! Shoppers Drug Mart will stop using single-use plastic shopping bags this week.

On January 30th, the pharmacy chain will “begin to transition away from single-use plastic shopping bags across all stores.”

Customers will be required to bring their own shopping bags, but there will also be a variety of reusable alternatives for sale at checkout.

This new rule will eventually go into effect at all of its locations across the country, of which there are nearly 1,350.

Shoppers Drug Mart executive Pat Dean said in a press release that this initiative is part of the company’s commitment to “fight climate change by reducing our carbon footprint.”

The chain is owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, which also owns major grocery chains No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, and T&T.

In June of 2022, Loblaw made an announcement that single-use plastic shopping bags would be phased out at all of its stores by early 2023.

So, you may as well start bringing your reusable totes to do your shopping at these stores, because plastic bags will be history any day now.

Loblaw has also committed to making all of its control brand and in-store packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, and sending zero food waste to landfill by 2030.

By 2040, the company says it will achieve its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

In late 2022, the federal government announced a single-use plastic ban in Canada to stop the manufacturing and importing of certain “harmful” items.

That includes checkout bags, plastic takeout containers, cutlery, and more.

We hope all of this means that single-use plastics will be a thing of the past soon enough.
