It’s been a big few years for Seattle sports teams, first we got the Seattle Kraken, and soon our city will have its very own cricket team. Major League Cricket announced that a brand new team, the Seattle Orcas will officially be joining the league this summer. Here’s what we know so far.

The MLC announced the news on March 16th noting that the new team will represent the Greater Seattle area, and the Pacific Northwest more broadly.

As you can see, the team name is a nod to one of our regions most iconic animals, the orca whale which are considered a “symbol of power and strength.”

The teams black and white colors also are also a nod to orcas with a green accent representing our regions lush nature.

The new league will bring some of the world’s top players to compete in the sport which boasts millions of fans in the US, and is the second most watched sport globally. The Delhi Capitals’ co-owner GMR Group is partnering with the Seattle Orcas to help build and operate a world class cricket team.

Despite debuting this summer, the new team will not host any games in the 2023 season. According to the MLC, the team, MLC, King County and the City of Bellevue are working to build a Cricket Community Park. The new park could host up to 6,000 people for future home games and other international cricket events. It would be a 20-acre facility located within Marymoor Park in Redmond, and the Redmond City Council has passed a motion of support for the development.

You can keep up with the new team over on their Instagram.
