As far as road trips from Calgary go, The Cowboy Trail, aka Highway 22, is a pretty epic one. The route boasts incredible views of canola and wheat fields. These are made even more fun with the not-so-rare sighting of cattle and horses. Then there are ranches, eateries, museums and many more fun spots. Whether you make pitstops at any of these and enjoy their themed attractions or simply drive around, this is one heck of a ride.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump
Just under two hours’ drive from Calgary is the well-preserved, culture-rich communal hunting site we know as Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Sure, its strong aboriginal history is what makes this UNESCO World Heritage Site so popular. But just standing at the Clifftop Viewpoint and taking in the awe-inspiring views of the prairies and the jagged mountains is rewarding enough.

Big Hill Springs
If your idea of a road trip is utterly gorg views with less effort, Big Hill Springs provincial park is a must-visit. With mountains in the backdrop, pristine lakes, dense wilderness, surprisingly easy trails and a variety of activities, the park is perfect for outdoor junkies of all calibres. Whether you want to get your steps in, spend a night camping or spend an afternoon fishing, the park has it all.

Waterton Lakes National Park
No matter how many times you frequent this park, the awe-inspiring scenery never fails to stun. Whether you are here for the lakes, waterfalls and streams, for amazing hiking and biking trails or simply for the never-ending views, the park won’t disappoint. Oh, and the landmark Prince of Wales Hotel is a whole experience in itself.
The park also has EV charging stations. So, you don’t have to drive far to charge up.
Any list of fun road trips from Calgary can never be complete without Ghost Lake on it. This beautiful warm-weather spot is one every Albertan keeps coming back for. The place is teh ultimate boating and water sports destination with a nice little beach to sunbathe and picnic. The fact that it also has unreal views is a bonus.
Again, at under 1 hour, the destination is easy to travel to in an EQ. That said, there are charging stations nearby if you need.
Quarry Lake near Canmore
For a tiny park with a tiny lake, Quarry Lake near Canmore comes with some seriously majestic views, fun hikes, soothing dips and an opportunity to bring your furry fam. The field nearby doubles up as an off-leash area for our adorable four-legged friends. Definitely on our list of road trips from Calgary and not just once.
Not that you would need but there are a few EV charging stations in Canmore if you drive electric.
