There’s a lake on a mountaintop with flowing fresh water in Ontario

Picture this: You find a stunning freshwater lake on a mountaintop but how it got there and where its source lays remains a mystery. This wondrous natural discovery is located within Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park, home to panoramic vistas and hiking adventures. Here’s what to know.

It’ll take you about two hours and a half to get there by car from Toronto. But the journey is absolutely worth it.

Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park is a day-use park where visitors can enjoy a lovely picnic, go on a hiking trek through Prince Edward County and discover the scenic yet mysterious lake which, of course, is the showstopper.

According to Ontario Parks, the lake is a “natural curiosity with a constant flow of clean, fresh water, with no apparent source.”

But its glittering sapphire blue waters and mountaintop views overlooking Lake Ontario are incredible.

Per Destination Ontario, scientists are believed to have debunked the mystery of Lake on the Mountain. They believe that its water source is actually from two streams coming in from higher ground, and even a nearby swamp.

“What remains unknown to this day is Lake on the Mountain’s true depth—previous attempts have gone as deep as 34 metres (112 ft) so far,” per Destination Ontario.

Though, according to Destination Ontario, a popular theory about the formation of this lake is that it is a collapsed doline, which is a limestone sinkhole that is formed when its foundation dissolves.

“Early settlers even believed the lake was so deep it didn’t have a bottom,” says Destination Ontario.

Indigenous Mohawks used to believe that the lake was home to many spirits, and was even given the name of “Onokenoga” which means “Lake of the Gods.”

Whatever its origins may be, one thing is for certain – it’s a wonderful natural escape worth visiting.
