The world’s most northerly active sand dunes are in Canada & they look unreal

From coast to coast the Great North has some unbelievable things to do and see, but the Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park is something else.

With 2,000 square kilometres to explore, this massive sand-covered surface creates the most northerly active dunes in the entire world and should be on every adventure-seeker’s hit list.

Not to be confused with the Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve in Alberta, these impressive mounds are actually in Saskatchewan along the shore of Lake Athabasca, which may or may not surprise you.

Here, you’ll see mounds up to 33 metres high, wildlife, and a ton of flora unique to the area. For this reason, they ask that visitors respect the land and leave everything as is.

“In order to protect the fragile environment, the park has been divided into three management zones. Each has different guidelines to govern camping and visitor activities, ” Tourism Saskatchewan writes on its website.

“Guidelines may change as required and are available by contacting the park office. Collecting plants, trees, venifacts and artifacts within the park is prohibited. Fishing is allowed.”

Another thing to note? Getting to the dunes may require more than snacks and some comfortable shoes!

“This park is accessible by float plane only and recommended for experienced wilderness users,” TS continues to explain.

“As there are no onsite services located within the park, visitors must check with a conservation officer prior to visiting the area. Guided tours by licensed outfitters are available.”
