The world’s tallest tepee stands 215 feet in this Alberta city

When it comes to iconic landmarks, there’s no place like Wild Rose Country! Not only will you find the world’s largest dinosaur and the world’s largest fishing lure while driving through the province, but those who visit Medicine Hat, Alberta can cross the ‘world’s tallest tepee’ off their list.

Built in 1988 for the Winter Olympics in Calgary, the Saamis Tepee is a tribute to Canada’s Indigenous community and is a whopping 215 feet tall.

Made entirely of steel and weighing 200 metric tons (without its foundation), it was moved up north and reassembled in October of 1991 over the course of a week.

Featuring 10 symbolic storyboards, the structure tells stories of “native culture and history,” in colours that were chosen for purity, the sun, and water.

According to The City of Medicine Hat, this area, which was once a buffalo camp and meat processing site, is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Northern Plains and is protected by the province.
