These tumbling waterfalls in Ontario have an island in the middle

Standing tall at 11 meters, these curtain-like falls are truly breathtaking.

They’re located at the point where the Rideau River merges with the mighty Ottawa River.

Picture this: a curtain of water dividing Green Island, the lush oasis right in the heart of the city. Just south of this, you’ll spot Ottawa’s Old City Hall.

Green Island, where the falls proudly reside, is also a quiet keeper of history.

Many are surprised to discover that it houses four military memorials, each with a unique story to tell.

One of them pays tribute to John McRae, the poet behind the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Rideau Falls Park is also home to several other commemorations.

The Mackenzie-Papineau Monument, the Commonwealth Air Force Memorial, and the National Artillery Monument are among the landmarks in this 2.89-hectare park.

Rideau Falls wasn’t always a serene park. Back in the 1800s, it was a bustling industrial area, powered by the falls’ immense energy.

It was only after World War II that the federal government stepped in, acquiring the area and clearing away industry to create the lovely park we see today.

So, next time you’re in Ottawa, don’t just stick to the usual tourist spots.
