North America’s largest night market is celebrating 25 years of international street food

It’s almost time to celebrate 25 years of the Richmond Night Market! This year is slated to be bigger and better than ever, if you can believe it. So, let’s take a trip down memory lane and gear up for this year’s festivities!

Filled with drool-worthy dining options, local retail vendors, and incredible live music, dance, and martial arts on the Main Stage, there are plenty of reasons to visit North America’s largest night market. But it’s the undeniable pull of international cuisine galore that keeps visitors flocking to the night market year after year.

“With over a million visitors each year, our anniversary season will be unforgettable, featuring exclusive admission pricing, happy hour specials, and unique prizes up for grabs,” reads the night market’s website.

The world’s first night market zipline

This year, the market will introduce the world’s first-ever night market zipline, according to a recent post. The 600-foot-long Skyrush Zipline will open this May, dazzling market-goers with an exciting ride over the market’s twinkling lights and buzzing energy.

“Brought to you by the world’s premier zipline builders, Skyline Ziplines, Skyrush Ziplines features four ziplines side by side for the ultimate racing experience,” reads the post.

The first event of its kind in the Lower Mainland

Founded in 2000 by Raymond Cheung, the Richmond Night Market got its start at the Continental Centre on Cambie Rd., and was the first event of its kind in the Lower Mainland. As the years went by and attendance grew astronomically, Cheung relocated the market to various other venues, eventually settling at the corner of Number 3 and Bridgeport Rd.

Returning in 2012 after a four-year hiatus across 18 acres, the market has continued to expand its booths and attractions ever since. Each season brings a new theme, from “Magical Candyland” in 2014 to “Summer Sweet Dragon” in 2024.

Today, visitors will find an array of sips and street food from around the globe, as well as merch and games. Past culinary finds include crab meat noodles, Japanese poutine, BBQ squid, Afghan bolani, Brazilian pastries, and much more. With hundreds of mouthwatering food stalls to explore, it’s a must-visit spring and summer attraction for a reason!

Tips before visiting the night market

According to Tourism Richmond, there are a handful of sure-fire ways to prepare for each and every night market once the season commences.

Firstly, prepare for lineups – even if you opt for a Zoom Pass for express entrance. Attracting more visitors each year, the Richmond Night Market is best enjoyed with healthy expectations. Remember, the best bites in life are worth waiting for!

Secondly, while some vendors may be card friendly, the majority are cash-only. There are ATMs on site if you run out or forget, but it’s always best to prepare with ample cash.

Finally, while parking is free, it also fills up quickly. Tourism Richmond recommends riding the Canada Line SkyTrain to Bridgeport Station to bypass parking stress and go straight to the food.

Oh, and don’t forget to check the market’s Facebook page before visiting, as it has the most up-to-date info!
