An Ontario university is now offering a course about Taylor Swift

Swifties, you may want to set your sights on a degree at Queen’s University. The school is now offering a cultural studies course that’s all about Taylor Swift and her legacy as a chart-topping songwriter.

The course will dive deep into “Swift’s cultural impact through an examination of her ‘inspirational anthems’ as literature,” the course description says.

Through the storytelling in her song lyrics, Swift recreates canonical literature to reject the opinions of others and prioritize her own voice, which students will have the opportunity to analyze.

The course will even touch on Swift’s reclamation of her own work amid her long battle with Scooter Braun, through her trademarked “(Taylor’s Version)” titles.

“Swift continues to craft her own literary and cultural legacy with full autonomy over her creative and intellectual property.”

You won’t be reading a textbook during this course, either. The readings include select songs from all nine of Swift’s studio albums and the texts that she alludes to in her lyrics, like William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1597), Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925).

Plus, students are required to view the Miss Americana (2020) and Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Session (2020) documentaries as well as several music videos.

Courses about celebrities are gaining popularity at Canadian universities. Earlier this year, Montreal’s Concordia University announced the launch of its Kanye West course, and Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) now teaches a course about Drake and The Weeknd.

The Taylor Swift course at Queen’s University will be taught in person starting this fall.
