This scenic Alberta lake freezes into an enchanted skating rink in the winter

Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park is a stunning destination all year round, but it’s truly something else in the wintertime!

Located 10 minutes from the Jasper town site, this enchanting pool is popular with paddlers and anglers in the warmer months, then freezes over to offer a one-of-a-kind experience in the winter.

Skating Pyramid Lake

Formed by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago, this lake is home to Pyramid Island, which has a “million-dollar view,” and the Pyramid Lake Lodge.

A chalet-style alpine lodge with 68 guest rooms, this stunning resort hosts a ton of complimentary winter activities.

From snowshoeing to fat bike rentals, they’ve got it all — but our favourite is their ice skating rink.

Safe enough to skate on between _ and _ (depending on the weather), adventure-seekers are encouraged to grab the hand of someone special and glide against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks and blue sky.

According to Parks Canada, those interested in playing a game of shinny hockey can also do so once temperatures drop, and it’s cleared off, but there are a few things of note!

While skating on natural ice is a must in the province of Alberta, it does have its risks.

First, it’s important to make sure that the ice is thick enough, second, you should never skate alone or in the dark.

Feeling chilly after you’ve pushed it to the limit?

Have some hot cocoa, tea, or coffee in the lobby, complimentary to those who are staying the night, so why not book a night?

Suites start at just $216 per night and include a one-hour rental of either skates, snowshoes or fat bikes, so, if you don’t have your own—there’s no problem!

Skating Pyramid Lake is an amazing experience, so check it out and be safe!

You’re in for a treat!
