Here’s what’s open and closed on New Year’s Day in Calgary

With 2025 finally here, we are eager to get out and about — but before you get things going, you’ll need to know what’s open and closed on New Year’s Day in Calgary! Plan ahead and enjoy, there’s no shortage of exciting things to experience!

Open

Malls

Though we’d recommend checking their hours before visiting them CrossIron MillsCF Chinook Centre and CF Market Mall will all be open on Jan. 1st.

Grocery and Liquor Stores

Whether you need a bottle of Baileys to top up your morning coffee, or milk and bread, you’re in luck. Most liquor and grocery stores will be open on New Year’s Day.

The Calgary Zoo

Hoping to catch Zoolights on New Year’s Day? The Calgary Zoo will be open on Jan. 1 – so bundle up and check it out!

Movie Theatres

Hoping to watch a movie on New Year’s Day? Landmark Cinemas and Cineplex locations across the city will all be open.

Telus Spark

Alternatively – Calgarians can also check out TELUS Spark, where you can explore new exhibits, science and centre staples.

The Calgary Tower

Views, views and more views! If you’re among the many who will have to entertain out-of-town guests on New Year’s Day, check out the Calgary Tower, grab a bite to eat at Sky 360 and enjoy because it’ll be open!

Calgary Transit

Need to get around on New Year’s Day? Calgary Transit will be operational on a Sunday level of service, according to their website. 

Closed

Costco

Looking to get your giant hot dog fix? Unfortunately, it’ll have to wait! Costco will also be closed on New Year’s Day in 2025.

Museums

Several museums such as Contemporary CalgaryThe National Music Centre, and The Hangar Flight Museum, will be closed for New Year’s Day.

City-Owned Recreational Facilities and Leisure Centres

Sorry, folks – but on January 1st, all city-owned pools, as well as fitness and rec centres will be closed in lieu of the Stat holiday.

Post Office

Whether it’s an Amazon return or an invitation – it’ll have to wait! On Jan. 1 (and on every Stat holiday) the post office will be closed.

Government Offices

From the passport office to the DMV, all government offices will be closed on Jan. 1.

But there you have it. Everything that is open and closed on New Year’s Day in Calgary. Here’s to rest, fun and family – it’s going to be a good one!
