September is creeping closer, and while that usually means the slight cooling of the weather, Albertans know that anything is possible weather-wise. That is to say, if there are any hikes left on your summer bucket list, you should cross those off sooner rather than later.
And if you’re all caught up, there’s still time for another adventure! The Plain of Six Glaciers trail is nestled among the towering Rocky Mountains and offers an array of incredible natural views. Most interestingly, it concludes at the site of a remote teahouse!
The hike kicks off at the beautiful Chateau Lake Louise, where you’ll follow a wide path for about two kilometres around the turquoise waters. At the back of the lake, you’ll feel yourself going upward as you navigate 360 meters of elevation over the next 3.6 kilometres.
Throughout the journey, you’ll be exposed to all sorts of landscapes. We’re talking forested terrain, meadows lush with wildflowers, and rocky switchbacks. And is that…fresh bread? You may feel remote, but you’ll know you’re nearing your destination when the beloved scent greets you.
Follow your nose until the trees open up into an alpine meadow with a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Louise and the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse.
The Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse is a family-run log-cabin teahouse that’s been in operation since 1959. While the Chai and homemade chocolate cake are can’t-miss menu items, the real treat is getting to talk to the owners, who have decades worth of firsthand knowledge of the area.
In keeping with its remote nature, the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse is cash-only. No tap here!
The overall hike is considered moderately difficult and is 5.3 kilometres one way. You can expect the round-trip to take four hours, plus whatever time you spend at the teahouse.
