Here’s when Vancouver’s outdoor pools & spray parks open this season

With temperatures climbing to the 20s in Vancouver this week, now is the ideal time to start planning for the return of the city’s outdoor pools and spray parks. The good news? You don’t have long to wait before they open for the season!

During the Vancouver Park Board’s May 6th Committee Meeting, the Board announced that the City’s aquatic season will begin on May 18th, with public swim sessions now available for booking.

“Beginning May 18th, outdoor pools including New Brighton, Second Beach, Kitsilano, and Maple Grove will begin to open for public use,” says General Manager Steve Jackson. “Staff are also preparing to lifeguard 10 waterfronts and beaches, including Second Beach, Third Beach, English Bay, Jericho Beach, Kitsilano, Locarno, Sunset, Spanish Banks, and Trout Lake.”

Note that as of Monday, May 13th, Kitsilano Pool is set to reopen in June, following unforeseen repairs. Stay tuned for an official opening date!

Of note, Trout Lake was not staffed last year due to “concerns with water quality.” However, this year the lake has been deemed “suitable for swimming,” with staff regularly testing the water to ensure its safety in the coming weeks.

Finally, Vancouver’s spray parks and wading pools (first-come-first-serve) will operate from May 20th to September 30th, most of which will have limited to no supervision.

So there you have it, Vancouver. If you’re looking to make a splash later this month, you’ll soon have plenty of outdoor pools to choose from!
