This architecturally significant Orcas Island home by the ‘hobbit house king’ is now an Airbnb

Washington has its fair share of architecturally significant homes from Arthur Erickson to historical Victorian masterpieces. That being said, it’s pretty rare that you are able to rent these homes. Until now, because there’s a handcrafted James Hubbell home tucked away on Orcas Island.

Who is James Hubbell? He’s a renowned architect and artist originally from New York known for creating organic homes. In some of today’s popular terms, the homes could be aptly described as “hobbit houses” and “cottage core”. But these homes are meant to be experienced and that’s why this Airbnb is really such a gem.

The owners describe the home as a “jewel box” and when you see the assortment of eye-catching details you’ll likely agree.

Guests will find stained glass windows, metal sculpture work, ceramic mosaics, and mixed-media artwork scattered throughout the home. You’ll also find unique architectural elements like a raised bedroom platform, spiral staircase, and stone-walled patio that also happens to hide a hot tub.

The home can technically fit four guests but only has one bedroom, so it might be better experienced with your SO or BFFs.

While there is wifi, this home seems like the perfect place to get back in touch with nature. After all, you have surrounding water and forest views as well as private beach access. Plus, you’re on Orcas Island so you might as well check out the island’s nature sites like Moran State Park.

If you’re ready to check it out for yourself you can rent the home for $328 a night, and at the moment there is plenty of availability.
