This province was the most popular place to move to in Canada last year

If anything positive has come of the last two years, it’s that a lot of us realized what we want to do and where we want to do it. Apparently, for many, that place was the west as shown in a new study released by U-Haul on the most popular places in Canada for DIY-movers for 2021.

While we can’t be sure if it was the fresh air or stunning views, it turns out that Canadians were drawn to the mountains last year with the two provinces that showed the most growth both bordering the Rockies.

According to the report, British Columbia came in second to Alberta, which saw a 33% increase in one-way truck arrivals, while prairie departures only rose to 29%.

“There are initiatives in Alberta that are creating more job opportunities and attracting residents,” said U-Haul area District Vice President, Naga Chennamsetty in a press release about the study.

“In the last year, we have seen a lot of movement into Alberta. More communities are developing in and around major cities. Not only that, but the Canadian Rockies are so accessible to residents here, and they offer a variety of recreational activities. Alberta is one of the best places to make a home.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean the east was without some love! While the province was third overall, it was actually Ontario’s North Bay, Belleville and the Greater Sudbury area that made up the list of top three cities in Canada.

This, according to U-Haul Area District Vice President, Jake Spelic, was due to Ontario being “the economic center of Canada” offering thousands of job opportunities, decent salaries and high quality of living, though, surprise, surprise, its best-known city, Toronto, was nowhere to be found.
