Open

Malls

Though we’d recommend checking their hours before heading out, the West Edmonton and Kingsway Malls will all be open on January 1st.

Grocery and Liquor Stores

Need milk or a bottle of Baileys to top up your morning coffee? You’re in luck. Though (again) we’d recommend checking your nearest locations’ hours, most liquor and grocery stores will be open on New Year’s Day.

Movie Theatres

Hoping to catch a flick on New Year’s Day? Landmark Cinemas and Cineplex locations across the city will all be open so pop some corn and settle in!

Telus World Of Science

Science rules! Especially when you get to check out some amazing family-friendly exhibitions at the TELUS World of Science! This New Year’s Day treat yourself to a movie inside the IMAX or a little light show in the Zeidler Dome – it’s going to be a blast!

Where: 11211 142 St NW, Edmonton

City-owned Recreational Facilities and Leisure Centres

Need to sweat out the night before? Many (but not all) of Edmonton’s Rec Centres will be open on New Year’s Day, however, we’d recommend checking your chosen facilities’ hours, as their hours may differ.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo

Lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) – if you hoping to check out Zoominscence on the 1st you’re in luck. According to their website, The Edmonton Valley Zoo will be open on New Year’s Day.

Closed

Museums

This year, Edmonton museums like the Royal Alberta Museum, the Art Gallery of Alberta, and the Alberta Aviation Museum will be closed on New Year’s Day – but don’t fret. They’ll be open again in no time!

Costco

Looking to get your giant hot dog fix? Unfortunately, it’ll have to wait! Costco will also be unshoppable on New Year’s Day.

Post Offices

Whether it’s an Amazon return or an invitation – it’ll have to wait! On January 1st (and on every Stat holiday) the post office will be closed.

Government Offices

From the passport office to the DMV, all government offices will be closed on January 1st.

But there you have it, friends. Everything that’s open/closed on New Year’s Day in Edmonton. Here’s to rest, fun and family – it’s going to be a good one!
