Ontario’s groundhog has just predicted an early start to spring

It’s official, folks! Ontario’s groundhog Wiarton Willie has predicted that an early start to spring is in our future this year. The town of South Bruce Peninsula broadcasted the annual ceremony at just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, where Willie took the stage and gave his prediction.

The tradition of Groundhog Day started way back in the late 1800s and is based on the Pennsylvanian Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd due to clear weather, winter will continue for six more weeks. If the woodchuck doesn’t see its shadow, spring will come early.

Southern Ontario’s skies are cloudy this morning thanks to another major snowstorm on the way, which means no shadow for Willie and good news for us.

Groundhogs all over the country will be making their seasonal predictions today. Unlike Willie, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam didn’t have good news for locals, predicting a long, cold winter ahead.

After the brutal winter we’ve already endured here in Ontario, we’re putting all of our faith in Wiarton Willie right about now.
